There are some important criteria to consider when buying a dog leash, which is why we have compiled the important criteria for you to help you make this decision.

First things first: There is no such thing as an all-in-one leash, which is why most dog owners should have more than one leash. Especially with large dogs, in dog sports and with service dogs, high-quality leashes that are adapted to the intended use are a key component in leading the dog safely.

Length of the leash
For a walk in the park or in the city, a leash with a length of 1.20 to 2 meters is usually sufficient. For longer hikes or jogging with the dog, a longer leash with a length of 3 to 5 meters is recommended. For training dogs that are still in training, a long line with a length of 10 to 20 meters can also be useful. For training, in stressful situations and in confined spaces as well as in traffic, leads with a length of 20 to 50 cm are ideal in order to have the dog under control at all times.

Material of the leash
The leash should be made of a durable and easy-care material. Commonly used materials for dog leashes are nylon, polyester, rubberized materials, biothane and leather. Nylon leashes are light and easy to care for, polyester leashes are particularly robust and durable, non-slip leashes made of Grip straps are robust and weatherproof. The woven rubber threads make them extremely easy to grip even when wet. Biothane leashes feel similar to leather, are very robust and easy to clean.

Fastener of the leash
Common dog leash fasteners include bolt snap hooks, safety snap hooks, Swedish hooks and KONG FROG snap hooks. Bolt snap hooks are available in a variety of sizes and materials, including stainless steel. They are extremely durable, resilient, rustproof and saltwater resistant. Brass snap hooks are sturdy, rustproof and won't freeze. Die-cast zinc snap hooks are lightweight, but not quite as corrosion-resistant and robust. Safety snap hooks offer a high level of comfort and the best possible protection against accidental opening thanks to the automatic twist lock. Swedish hooks made of galvanized steel are resilient and allow for quick leash attachment, but can open themselves in certain situations. The patented system of the KONG FROG snap hook is unmatched in terms of tensile strength and reliability.

Quality of the leash
The best material and the most durable carabiner are of no use if the leash is not of high quality. Robust seams made of tear-resistant thread ensure that the leash functions reliably over a long period of time, even under the greatest strain.
